01 / Our story

A homestead built to teach us—and serve beyond its fence line.

Root Awakening Homestead is Jim and Cara Buchanan’s 20-acre homestead in the Florida Panhandle. It is a place to grow food, restore land, rebuild practical skills and test ideas in real conditions.

We are not trying to recreate the past. The past contains knowledge, patterns, relationships and skills that modern life sometimes replaced before fully understanding their value. Our work is to recover what still serves us, combine it with what we have learned since, and build something stronger for the future.

The parts of a system matter, but its health lives in the relationships between them. Soil, water, food, health, knowledge and community are not separate projects.

Nature isn’t just something to admire. It’s something to learn from. Diversity, cycles, feedback and function guide how we design and decide.

We start small, test in the real world, keep what works and improve what does not. Trust comes from showing the process—not pretending it is finished.
