If you’ve been considering Starlink for your rural property or travels, the current Mini offer is worth a look.
Our experience—and why we recommend Starlink
We use Starlink’s residential service daily at Root Awakening Homestead (rootawakeninghomestead.com). We’ve used Starlink for several years at previous homesteads, during cross-country motorhome travel, and while staying at Airbnbs.
Having a connection where conventional rural internet options are limited has made it a useful tool for us. With a clear view of the sky, we’ve been able to stay connected in places where getting dependable internet would otherwise be a challenge.
That clear sky view matters. Trees and other obstructions can interrupt service, so use the Starlink app to check your intended location before installing it.
We’ve now ordered a Mini for travel and use in other areas of our property. Our recommendation is based on our experience with our existing Starlink service. We’ll share our Mini experience once it arrives and we’ve tested it.
Two main service options
1. Residential service: For everyday internet at a fixed home address. Plans include unlimited data and start at $55/month where available, with higher-speed options at $85 and $130/month. Equipment and rental terms depend on the offer shown for your address.
2. Roam service with the Mini: For travel, camping, hiking with a suitable power source, or use at different locations around your property. Previously sold for $499, Mini equipment is currently $149 upfront—or effectively $49 after a qualifying $100 referral reward. Active service starts at $55/month.
The Mini can be used at home on a Roam plan. In the US, don’t assume it can be activated on a Residential plan; those plans require eligible Residential equipment.
How the $100 referral program works
Eligible new customers can receive a $100 referral reward when signing up for qualifying Residential or Roam service through our link.
Start here: Explore Starlink with our referral link
To qualify:
- Order directly through the referral link.
- Be a new Starlink customer. Existing and returning customers aren’t eligible for the new-customer reward.
- Activate your equipment and maintain qualifying active service for at least two full months.
- Keep eligible service active until the reward is confirmed before switching to Standby.
The reward comes later, rather than being deducted at checkout. It defaults to service credit; cash may be available through the options shown in your account.
Disclosure: We can receive a referral reward when you qualify through our link, too.
The Mini deal: $149 upfront, effectively $49 after the reward
Previously sold for $499, the Mini is now $149 upfront—or effectively $49 after a qualifying $100 referral reward.
$149 Mini equipment − $100 referral reward = $49 effective equipment cost.
Monthly service, taxes, shipping, and any applicable fees are additional. This is the equipment cost after the reward—not the total cost to begin service.
For example, the Mini plus two months of the $55 plan totals $259 before taxes and fees, or $159 after a qualifying $100 reward.
We don’t have a confirmed end date for the equipment offer. Pricing and availability may change.
Mini Roam plans: at your property or on the road
The Mini’s Roam plans provide portability, whether you’re traveling or moving between locations around your property.
| Roam plan | Monthly service | Data allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Roam — 100 GB | $55 | 100 GB high-speed, then unlimited low-speed |
| Roam — 300 GB | $80 | 300 GB high-speed, then unlimited low-speed |
| Roam — Unlimited | $175 | Unlimited high-speed data |
The 100 GB and 300 GB plans limit the amount of high-speed data—not the total amount of data. After that allowance, the connection continues at reduced speeds.
Reports put that reduced connection at roughly 0.5–1 Mbps download, although results vary and that is not a guaranteed speed. Think basic messages and light browsing rather than dependable streaming or video calls.
The 100 GB and 300 GB plans cover the US and Canada for US customers. International travel requires an appropriate plan and compliance with Starlink’s travel requirements.
Standby when you aren’t using it: $10/month
Eligible Mini subscriptions can switch to Standby for $10/month when high-speed service isn’t needed.
Standby includes unlimited low-speed data at up to 0.5 Mbps download and upload for basic messaging and access to reactivate service. It is not intended for use while moving.
Complete the first two full months of qualifying active service and confirm your $100 reward before switching to Standby.

Standard Residential service: unlimited data for home
If you need a permanent household connection, compare Starlink’s Residential plans. Eligible new Residential customers can receive the $100 referral reward through the same link.
Unlike the capped Roam plans, all three Residential plans include unlimited data without a monthly high-speed GB allowance. The 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps plans instead have download-speed caps.
| Residential plan | Monthly service | Data and speed |
|---|---|---|
| Residential — 100 Mbps | $55 | Unlimited data; downloads capped at 100 Mbps |
| Residential — 200 Mbps | $85 | Unlimited data; downloads capped at 200 Mbps |
| Residential — Max | $130 | Unlimited data; maximum available speeds and highest Residential network priority |
Unlimited data does not mean guaranteed speed. Actual performance varies with location, obstructions, weather, and network demand.
Residential service is intended for a single registered home location. Plan availability depends on your address; the 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps options are available only in select areas.
Equipment is separate from these service prices. Our screenshots show rental equipment choices, so review the exact upfront charges, any recurring equipment fees, and return requirements. A $0 upfront rental does not mean you own the equipment.
How to order Residential service

Which makes more sense?
For everyday household internet: Residential offers unlimited data at a fixed home location, making it worth comparing if you stream frequently or connect several devices.
For travel, occasional use, or moving between locations: The Mini with Roam offers portability and the option of Standby when you don’t need high-speed service.
Both start at $55/month where available, but they serve different needs. The $55 Residential plan includes unlimited data at a capped download speed; the $55 Roam plan includes 100 GB of high-speed data before slowing down.
